Braathens Regional Airlines performed The Perfect Flight

We know that the domestic flight is needed, both today and tomorrow. We also know that it is possible to fly both responsible and sustainable. That is why we took the challenge to perform the perfect flight.

On May 16th, an ATR 72-600 took off from Halmstad City Airport, heading to Stockholm Bromma. So, what is the perfect flight?

Braathens Regional Airlines wins the Sustainability Award at Grand Travel Award.

The excitement, and the pride, we felt when we, on Valentine's Day, won the Sustainability Award at Grand Travel Award with the motivation:

"Braathens Regional Airlines has during 2018 taken the leading jacket in the debate for bio fuel, and is the first airline to join the government initiativ Fossil free Sweden, with the goal to become fossil free in 2030. In addition to that, Braathens Regional Airlines has made it easy for both leasure and business customers to pay to fly fossile free, leading to an increased will amongst the customers to pay to fly climate smart."

We want to make domestic flight fossil free in 2030.

The goal for Braathens Regional Airlines is to make the domestic flight fossil free in 2030. Together with our industry organization Swedish Air Transport and the government initiativ Fossil free Sweden, we have compiled a road map of how that is going to happen, that we have submitted to the government.

The domestic flight stands for 1% of Sweden's carbon dioxide emissions.

The carbon dioxide emissions for the domestic flight have been at a relatively flat level during decades, and is even a bit lower today than it was in 1990, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. But we are not satisfied with that, we are working for even lower emissions. Both with fuel potentiation and with opportunities to change fossile fuel to fossil free fuel. The goal is a fossil free domestic flight in 2030.

Swedish aviation's carbon dioxide emissions are lower than the road traffic.

There are always several ways to present facts. We don't create our own numbers, we rely on public sources that knows what they are doing. Aviation: 2.8 million ton carbon dioxide (all aviation that starts from Swedish airports and to their first destination). Road traffic: 16.5 million ton carbon dioxide (whereof car traffic is 10.6 million ton).

Aviation pays for its emissions.

Aviation pays for its carbon dioxide emissions via the certificate of emissions within the EU, named EU ETS. From 2020, there is also a global system with the name CORSIA.

Residual waste from the forest can provide Swedish domestic aviation with bio fuel

The single moste important question to make the aviation fossil free, is to change the aircrafts fuel to a new, sustainable fuel. All aircrafts today can fuel up to 50% bio fuel. According to calculations from Luleå University of Technology, among others, residual waste from Swedish forestry can cover the need of bio fuel for domestic aviation, without having to fell any more forest. Unfortunately, there is no largescaled production of fuel from forest raw material today, so there is need for investments in a production facility. Today, Braathens Regional Airlines flies with bio fuel produced by used frying oil.

Bio fuel is a good way of reducing the aviation's climate effect.

The bio fuel that Braathens Regional Airlines uses, reduces the fossil carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 70%, seen from a life cycle perspective.

Green Class

Great news for those who would like to fly greener. Add fossil free bio fuel for only 300 SEK. We also carbon offset all of our flights.

Book Green Class

To fly with bio fuel is not carbon offset.

There are many different ways to carbon offset for your flights via various organizations. The difference between a bio fuel flight and carbon offset is that bio fuel does not add any carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide that is released by the fuel is the same as the fuel plant has absorbed from the atmosphere during its life. Carbon offset does not reduce the emissions.

0,5 liters/10 km is your fuel consumption for your propeller plane flight.

The straightest way between the destinations and low fuel consumption on our propeller planes results in a fuel consumption of less than 0,5 liters/10 km/passenger. The carbon dioxide emission per person becomes equivalent with driving a green car between the cities.

We offer companies to fly with a quantity of bio fuel of their choice.

To fly in Green Class means that every booked business trip is flown with the quantity of bio fuel of your choice. As an entrepreneur, you can decide for yourself how much bio fuel that should be used for all of your trips.

Our Turboprop aircrafts creates no high height effects.

High heights effects, meaning that nitrogen oxide and water vapor are released in the atmosphere and has a warming effect on the climate, can arise when airplanes fly higher than 8000 meters. Our propeller planes do not fly that high. They are flying at an altitude of approximately 6000 meters.

At only 4 of our 26 domestic routes, a limited number of minutes of highaltitude flying is made.

  • LTU Green Fuels Biojet Initiative

  • Network for Transport Measures

  • The Nordic Network for Electric Aviation (NEA)
Satsningen av Nordic Innovation under Nordiska ministerrådet som ska arbeta med både infrastruktur, industrifrågor och nya affärsmodeller. NEA ska arbete med kunskapsöverföring mellan de nordiska länderna. Läs mer här.
